I’ve been to Peleliu 2x and covered most of the island on my own. The second time, I rented a van from my hotel and drove to the airfield. It was bumpy, but I got it up to 60mph and pretended to be a Zero taking off. Had to slow down for the big coconut crabs at the end though!

Interesting choice to make this part of Sledge's narrative in the show. This scene is based on Leckie's experience with 2/1/1 on Peleliu as detailed in Helmet For My Pillow. Sledge, Captain Haldane, & the rest of 3/5/1 were not involved whatsoever. Sledge makes no mention of anything like this happening in With The Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa. The real interaction did not end in the wounded being loaded aboard the amtrack. Here’s what Leckie mentioned in his memoir: "Now the day was dying amid hoarse cries for water or help for the wounded. An empty amtrack from another unit had strayed into our sector, and Lieutenant Racehorse, seeing it, bounded alongside, sprang aboard and ordered the driver to our front. Racehorse wanted to bring back the wounded But the driver was not eager to obey. He was from another outfit, he was tired, he saw no reason in risking his flesh for a strange officer. He said he could not obey. Racehorse told him he had better. The driver refused openly. Racehorse drew his pistol and laid it against the driver's head and said, "Get youah ass moving," and the driver quickly shifted gears and drove frontward with a roar. Racehorse had won a Navy Cross for his bravery on Guadalcanal. He won another on Peleliu, but it was awarded posthumously. He perished attacking a pillbox, may he rest in peace." World at war remake looks good!

I haven’t read Sledge’s book With the Old Breed, but I was surprised that this scene or a very similar one turns up in Leckie’s account of Peleliu in Helmet for My Pillow. Which is strange that they make it part of Sledge’s narrative here and not Leckie’s, unless something similar happens with Sledge. In Leckie’s account, it’s not Haldane, it’s a lieutenant nicknamed “Racehorse”, and he very actively threatened the driver with the pistol. Racehorse was killed during a subsequent assault.

fighting in the tropical environment is literally nightmare in all aspect, I live in Vietnam and I know how unmerciful tropical climate can be. I think the war in the pacific is horrendous than any other theatre in ww2, anyone who say eastern front is worse is pure russian-ass-kissing bullshit

Having owned both the M1 Carbine and M1 Thompson, I'd have to say I would never want the Thompson in combat, it's too damned heavy, and the .45 acp cartridge is fine for close range fights, but damn near worthless past 50 yards. In my opinion, this was one of the most intense scenes d the series. However, a question has plagued me since I first viewed the scene: Why weren't airstrikes called I on the hangar defended by the Japanese, especially since there there were planes flying overhead to other missions? It seems to me that it would have significantly reduced Marine casualties.

That scene in Episode Six was better than anything in BoB or MoA either! Can have all the drama and all but got to have horrible realistic battle scenes like this and Omaha Beach on SPR.

Is it just me or that a modern version of the Japanese knee mortar would go alright working with a drone probably almost small enough to be standard issue

Yea so what is funny about all this, is that those of us that have PTSD stay up all night and watch shit that causes us to have PTSD. So...I was never in combat, never in the military, but I was a nurse for 20 some years, and some nights I saw 2, 3, 4, patients die....And there was nothing I could do about it. And so I can not sleep.

Details: the aircraft flying overhead had their landing gear down. Helped slow them for the bombing run and saved time going back to their flattops.

What I absolutely appreciate is that many of the faces and personalities in the Pacific were southerners.
